Audiobook Review: Keys to the Coven by Vicky Loebel

                              Author: Vicky Loebel

Narrators: Nick Podehl & Emily Beresford

Length: 12 hours 49 minutes

Publisher: Pentachronistic Press

Released: Jun. 17, 2013

Genre: Paranormal

The Road to Hell is Paved with Bad Intentions. Get ready for Keys to the Coven, a witty, tightly plotted, (adult) urban-fantasy/romance set in an original universe where karma is power, sex is karma, and it's not who you know but whose soul you own that matters.* To become a demon, you must die in complete and utter despair. Three hundred years ago, Max passed that test with flying colors and joined the afterlife resolving never again to have innocent blood on his hands. Now Max has been given the job of breaking a young witch's family curse. But what she doesn't know, what Max can't bring himself to tell her, is that completing his mission almost certainly means her death. When Felicity Woodsen inherits her mother's coven, she learns each firstborn Woodsen daughter must become the consort of an evil-arch demon. Felicity's only hope is to ally with the mysteriously charming Max. But is saving her body from one demon worth risking her soul with another? Roxashael became a demon when his Roman captors sent his family, one by one to be devoured by lions. The lesson was clear: power is good; lots of power is better. Two-thousand years later, Rocky has power. He's purchased hundreds of souls, and he's created the Minsk Homunculus, a magic artifact that, by binding a human witch as his consort, turns him into an arch-demon and places him above the goody-two-shoes laws of karma. Unfortunately, Rocky made a mistake. He fell in love with Felicity's mother and in a moment of weakness promised to give up his demon-consort charm. Now Felicity's mother is dead, the Minsk Homunculus is slated for destruction, and Rocky's power as an arch-demon is about to end. No demon can break a promise. If Rocky refuses to give up the Minsk Homunculus, he'll become the lowest, most abject slave in Hell. But then, why break promises when they're so easy to corrupt? **Caution: This book contains violence, strong sexual themes, moderately explicit sex between consenting adults, (unfulfilled) threats against children, and one completely gratuitous reference to unicorns.

I was a little disappointed with Keys to the Coven. I will be honest I didn't know what to expect going into reading this book. As I listened and got further into the book the more confused I became. I love twists and turns in books but this one had A LOT. Maybe it was meant for print only and not audio. I'm not sure but I couldn't keep up on how things would get off track.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Vicky Loebel. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Q&A with Author Vicky Loebel
  • Tell us about the process of turning your book into an audiobook. Turning “Keys to the Coven” into an audiobook was a dream come true. As a long-time listener (my Audible library is HUGE), I was already a fan of narrator Nick Podehl, so when I spotted his name on the ACX website, I sprang. Mike Naramore of Terrestrial Media recommended Emily Beresford as the female narrator and handled everything, so I got to walk the red-carpet of audiobook production - all without changing out of my pajamas!
  • Do you believe certain types of writing translate better into audiobook format? Humor is a challenge because it’s taste specific - different people are going to see different things as funny, a fact that was brought home to me when I listened to “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” - a book I thought was only so-so when I read it myself - brilliantly narrated by author Douglas Adams. (If you’ve never heard this version, track it down!)
  • Was a possible audiobook recording something you were conscious of while writing? Nope. If it were, I’d have taken pity on the narrators and made my sentences a little less convoluted. :)
  • How did you select your narrators? Comic timing is everything when reading a book that is equal parts serious adventure and humor. Since I was lucky enough to know Nick’s work, I simply found his address and threw myself across his driveway blocking his car…. Just kidding. He turned out to be available. Although I kept the driveway thing in reserve....
  • What influenced your decision to have dual narration? “Keys to the Coven” alternates point of view between the male and female leads on a chapter-by-chapter basis, so dual narration was a natural choice, but I was worried about finding two readers who worked well together. Fortunately my production house was able to recommend Emily Beresford.
  • Were there any real life inspirations behind your writing? My first stories were fanfiction based on an old 1960s television show called “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” about a pair of optimistic spies who save the world and always do the right thing. My demon, Max, is a distillation of the nobility, pragmatism, and dry wit I adore those characters. And sexiness - did I forget to mention sexiness?
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you? I love audiobooks! I started checking them out from the library (remember CDs?) years ago to listen to while commuting, and they quickly expanded to brighten chores, exercise, and rocking babies at two in the morning. Along the way, I saw the added dimension a great narrator brings to a story and discovered many new authors while sampling books by beloved narrators. In my opinion, it’s perfect symbiosis!
  • In your opinion, what are the pros and cons of writing a stand-alone novel vs. writing a series? I love to fall in love with characters (especially well-crafted secondary characters), so I really understand the appeal of a series. But I also enjoy all sorts of styles and genres and love to try out different worlds and plots. So both are great! Had I but world enough and time….
  • Have any of your characters ever appeared in your dreams? Often, particularly toward the end of a project. Those smart-alecs always have something cleverer to say or more inventive to do than whatever I wrote in the first place, so then it’s revisions, revisions, revisions until my dream-masters are satisfied.

  1. Waffle fries or curly fries? My waffles generally come out pretty curly
  2. GIF with a hard g or soft g? Hard - soft ‘g’ is for gpeg
  3. Fantasy or science-fiction? Urban Fantasy
  4. Superman or Batman? Superman! But I confess my real weakness is for Clark Kent
  5. Text message or call? Text
  6. Pancakes or waffles? Chocolate Chip pancakes
  7. Doctor Who or the Walking Dead? Dr. Who - any episode that does not revolve around a family member
  8. TV Shows or movies? TV Shows (lately)
  9. Facebook or Twitter? Facebook
  10. Alice in Wonderland or Robinson Crusoe? Robinson Crusoe on Mars
  11. Being too warm or too cold? Too cold. Because I always pack my winter underwear
  12. Netflix or Hulu? Netflix for binging; Hulu for catching up
  13. Work Hard or Play Hard? I’m a writer. Work is play (and sometimes hard)!
  14. Passenger or Driver? Bring the car around at six please, Jeeves.
  15. Amusement Park or Day at the Beach? Give me a boardwalk at the beach!
  16. Honesty or Other’s Feelings? Polite evasion
  17. Movie at Home or Movie at the Theater? Home

Audiobook Review: Lost in the Clouds by R.K. Gold

Author: R.K. Gold

Narrator: Kyle Tait

Length: 4 hours 3 minutes

Publisher: Earl of Plaid

Released: Aug. 3, 2017

Genre: Paranormal

Neville Canton was about as average as any man can be. He had a mediocre job, a pleasant wife, an on-going feud with his sister, and an average case of cancer that took his life.   But death wasn’t the end of his problems and even average people have to learn to overcome.   Now trapped in a cloud between the living and the dead, he must find his way to the afterlife.   With the help of a spiritual guide he navigates through seven challenges; seven tasks to sever his final connections to the mortal world.   If he fails, he forfeits his eternity and the consequences may be worse than death.

R.K. Gold graduated from the University of Maryland in 2014 with a B.A. in English and is now pursuing a M.S. in Economics from the University at Buffalo. He is a non-genre specific author who enjoys reading and writing about characters searching for their purpose in life.

Lost in the clouds was amazing. Gold did a wonderful job at describing the journey of Neville's afterlife experience. This is the first story I've read by this author and I will be reading more by Gold.

The narrator, Kyle Tait did a wonderful job with no errors. The reading was done perfectly and the flow was done nicely.

I do highly recommend this book.

I received this audiobook as part of my participation in a blog tour with Audiobookworm Promotions. The tour is being sponsored by Kyle Tait. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.

Q&A with Narrator Kyle Tait
  • When did you know you wanted to be an audiobook narrator? You know, it’s funny, my Dad told me for years that it would be a great line of work to look into, but I was never really interested until I was 25 years old or so. I worked in baseball full time as a radio broadcaster, so I had a lot of down time in the 6-month offseason. I started doing audiobooks as a hobby/part-time job, and quickly fell in love with it, so I went full time in 2016.
  • Did you find it difficult to “break into” audiobook narration? What skill/tool helped you the most when getting started? Actually, I found it quite easy. As a baseball broadcaster, I was used to “telling stories” on the air every night, so the transition was a natural one. There are a lot of similarities in the cadence and delivery. I also already had the equipment and technical knowledge, since a lot of the editing and mastering skills overlap between radio and voiceover.
  • A lot of narrators seem to have a background in theatre. Is that something you think is essential to a successful narration career? Not at all. While I love going to the theatre, especially musicals, I have no background in acting whatsoever. My first audiobook was the very first acting I ever did.
  • How do you manage to avoid burn-out? What do you do to maintain your enthusiasm for narrating? I like to perform a mix of genres. I love performing all kinds of books--sci-fi, mystery, history, thrillers, fiction, non-fiction--you name it! But I find after I’ve done, say, a sci-fi book, I don’t want to pile another sci-fi right after it. I like to switch genres so it feels new and fresh.
  • Are you an audiobook listener? What about the audiobook format appeals to you? Very much so. I traveled a lot in the sports world, mostly long bus and car rides, so I loved to flip on an audiobook and get lost in a great narration. I love to listen to other narrators and get ideas for how they approach certain characters or situations, and see how their styles change between a descriptive passage and an action passage.
  • What about this title compelled you to audition as narrator? I’ve always had a curious fascination with the afterlife, and the idea of an average guy like Neville having to pass a series of tests really grabbed my attention. As I read the audition script, I realized pretty quickly that RK has a special way with words, and I wanted to be a part of bringing that to life--or, death, as it were.
  • How closely do you prefer to work with authors? I like to work very closely with authors, typically texting back and forth throughout the book’s production. My end goal is to make the book sound like it sounded in the author’s head as they wrote it. I want the characters to jump off the page and into my narration, and that only works if I have a good relationship with the author. RK and I had an open line of communication and joked around a lot throughout production. I think that was the biggest key in making this a great audiobook.
  • How did you decide how each character should sound in this title? I think the hardest character to come up with was the “old man”, Neville’s guide to the after life. It’s hard to imagine yourself in Neville’s situation--trying to come to grips with your own death, and now being tethered to this crazy old man, with the threat of possibly having to spend eternity with him. But as I read through the manuscript, I imagined this old man as sort of a creepy, eccentric version of Yoda from Star Wars.
  • Do you read reviews for your audiobooks? I’ll admit it… Yes, I do. Negative reviews can sometimes be hard to swallow, but the truly objective or constructive reviews help me develop and improve! I can’t do much with “I didn’t like his voice…” but if they give a constructive reason, like “His characters all sounded the same,” that’s something I can work on for my next performance.
  • What bits of advice would you give to aspiring audiobook narrators? Research research research! Listen to a lot of other narrators, both good and bad, to get ideas of how they perform. Read a LOT, even books that you aren’t going to narrate, and imagine how you would perform those characters. And as you prepare to narrate a new book, read it thoroughly before you ever press Record. Take notes on characters, and then talk to the author over the phone about who he had in mind when he created that character.
  • What’s next for you? I’m working on a brand new sci-fi work, “Skypunch” by Logan Castle. It’s got a little bit of everything--action, adventure, time travel, even some steamy scenes. Coming to Audible in late August!
  • Bonus question: Any funny anecdotes from inside the recording studio? My wife says she can’t listen to my audiobooks. If she’s home while I record in my studio, she always puts on headphones so she can’t hear me. She says she doesn’t like all the voices in my head.

Without the sun and moon to guide my inner clock, there was really no way for me to distinguish how many nights or days had passed. The darkness was different from any I had experienced before. My eyes could not quite adjust.
Although I had a real bed and a partial bath with a toilet and small wash sink, there was no sense of comfort. What seemed to be the only entrance was   sealed so tight that no light seeped in from the perimeter. There were no windows; the walls were cold and barren. My hands explored my surroundings, yet I could not even find an outlet or light switch.
I tried to escape my fears by focusing on remembering less stressful times, most of which were with Gram. I replayed the past in my head, hoping that somewhere hidden in those memories might be a clue as to what happened and how I ended up in the dark.
When my fear and confusion subsided enough, I willed myself to sleep. It was my only escape from the heaviness the darkness imposed upon me. This didn’t help my capacity to estimate the length of my imprisonment. I didn’t know how long or how often I drifted off to sleep. There were moments I lay there struggling to determine if my eyes were open or closed.
One would think the quiet would be soothing, only it amplified every little thing. I realized there was no true stillness. I could envision the flecks of dust floating through the air, crashing into the floor like pellets of hail on a summer day. The anticipation of hearing footsteps approaching my room sent continuous chills up my spine with every little noise the silence allowed.
There was something about the smell in the air and the chill of the walls and floor that led me to believe I was still somewhere in the desert. The lack of moisture in the atmosphere left my mouth sticky and dry. Being dehydrated from lack of fluids wasn’t helping. I wasn’t sure if the faucet water was safe to drink.
The pains in my stomach reminded me how much I longed for a veggie-filled pita with hummus and feta cheese. My mouth watered at the thought of a guilt-filled bag of Doritos. I should have been grateful I wasn’t completely being starved in there. I don’t know how or when, but food did appear in my room from time to time—and I use the term food loosely. A couple of crackers or a piece of jerky doesn’t really constitute food to me. I had to take what I could since I still didn’t have a clue where I was, who was keeping me, or why.
Since Gram died, while I was away at college, there really wasn’t a home to go back to. I decided to take the small amount of money she left me and put most of it in the bank. I’d just moved to Santa Fe and prepaid a year’s rent for a studio-sized house on a small side street. Santa Fe was appealing because it was close to the last place Gram lived, La Cienega, just outside the city limits. The sad thing is, without employment and friends or family in the new city, no one would miss me.
At this realization, my heart grew heavier. Although I could feel the burn in my throat, threatening the shower of tears, I choked it back. Tears wouldn’t fight off the shadows. Appearing resilient would help me keep up my strength.
I contemplated screaming out, demanding an answer as to why I was there. Trepidation brought that action to a silent halt. I didn’t want to face the potential terrors that stalked the future. I watched enough crime television shows to know how much worse this could get. I counted on my silence as my best defense.
I continued to make desperate attempts at feeling around the walls that encased me. Pressing my face against the cold surfaces, I struggled to hear a trace of someone, anyone, only my ears were denied. Could it be I was truly alone in this unwarranted exile? Perhaps this was it; in the end the darkness would consume me.
I dropped to my knees at the center of my prison. I could feel the surge of sadness and anger coursing through my body. My core heated and it felt as though my blood was on fire. I acknowledged each pore of my skin as the fine hairs stood at attention from the vibration that shook my extremities. With my teeth clenched and my eyes pressed shut, I tried to regain my breath and focus on Gram.
In a whisper, I called out to her. “Gram… Gram, I know you are out there watching over me. I just wish I could hear your voice.”
I continued to speak to her in my head. As much as I always wished something exciting would happen to me, being incarcerated in this godforsaken dark box wasn’t at all what I had in mind.
As I looked down toward the amulet resting on my chest, my fingers encased the charm. I closed my eyes, and memories of the time my grandmother draped it around my neck flocked to the forefront.
It was the summer I turned sixteen. Gram and I took a road trip to the Painted Desert, one of our favorite places to visit. I loved being surrounded by mountains made of rainbows of rock. Some people referred to this location as the “badlands.” When I was there, though, I felt filled with a unique sense of lightness that almost lifted me off my feet. Being there was effortless.
I could walk for hours, soaking in the beauty and freshness of the landscape. I felt connected, not necessarily to anything in particular; I just felt at one with nature. It was like the spirit of the earth moved through me. Even when I was alone on a trail, I never felt lonesome.
The day Gram gave me this necklace, it was as if the heavens had opened up and dumped colors all around us. The sun sank past the painted-rock walls that bordered our location. The sky swelled with layers of purple, pink, orange, and even a touch of gold at the tips of the earth. Gram always knew how to pick just the right moment and location to make a special occasion feel magical.
“Kasha, you are becoming a strong and beautiful young woman. The women in our family have always had a special bond with one another. You must always remember, even when we’re not together, we’re a part of each other, linked always.”
I knew part of what she was being at had to do with my mother. It had been many years since I saw her last, but now was neither the time nor place to start thinking about that. Squeezing the pendant in my hand, a giant, slow breath helped push her out of my head, for now.
Gazing back down at my necklace, I pretended to make out more than the silhouette in the darkness. In my mind, I could see the pentagonal piece of petrified wood encased in silver. The pie-shaped stones enhanced each point of the rounded pentacle. Beautifully etched floral designs in the metal surrounded the stones. A remnant of something engraved on the rear side was almost visible, but it had worn down long before I took possession. If only I could make out what had been there; I often fantasized about what it might have said.
I wasn’t sure if there was any significance to the markings, but they looked ancient. Maybe it once belonged to an Egyptian pharaoh or a Celtic princess. Too bad I never took the time to ask Gram if she knew the history of this piece. It would have been interesting to know to whom it had belonged.
“You have an intensity about you that is unrivaled. Keep this with you at all times. You will find it will keep you grounded and connected to what is important.”
Gram always said weird stuff like that. I’d gotten used to it and stopped trying to figure out if her comments had hidden meanings. As a kid I would get embarrassed when she talked like that in front of other people. I saw the way they looked at her, probably thinking, What a shame that beautiful woman is so crazy. It was that quirkiness I grew to love most about her when I became a young adult.
I guess Gram was at least a little bit right about this amulet. Holding it brought thoughts of her to me. It seemed to cool me down and calm my nerves. At the same time, it warmed me and gave me comfort. A brief moment of peace helped subdue the constant fear and avoid the panic that could set in at any moment.
